Grow Basil At Home For An Awesome Cuisine Experience

Since time immemorial, the basil herb has been loved for its pungent taste and robust flavor. The name finds its root in a Greek term which denotes royalty. This is indeed apt, as the herb enjoyed immense popularity in the Mediterranean regions, where it was an essential ingredient in many dishes. Many people would grow basil and use it during prayers and rituals to increase fertility.

During the middle ages, officials would tie basil leaves together in a net, which they carried around to ward off illness and bad odors. Basil has shiny dark green leaves which are highly aromatic, and the plant typically reaches nine inches in height. This herb originated in the pacific and then was taken to Asia and Europe. After that, it spread throughout the known world.

It was in the Mediterranean that this herb was especially prized, with it quickly becoming a staple item in many dishes. It was also in traditional medicine and healing. The fresh variety of basil always adds something very special to a dish, which means it is better to Grow Basil from scratch. When dried, it loses a lot of that unique pungency. If you wish to try your hand at growing this herb basil, it is quite easy.

Add some good quality compost to the trays, which you can find at a nursery. If you prefer to Grow Your Own Herb, the following mix is excellent. Mix together five parts topsoil, two parts grit, two parts sharp sand and three parts peat moss. This mix will allow for excellent water filtration and air ventilation, which will greatly benefit the young plants. Place the seeds on the soil and gently push them into the mix, using a pencil to make sure that they are covered. Sieve some compost over them and give them a light watering.

Place the tray in a warm place where there is adequate light. When Growing Herbs At Home, they should not be exposed to harsh sunlight, so keep an eye out for that. Cover them with a thin sheet of plastic or glass. This cover will help the soil retain water while the seeds are busy growing. Check regularly to ensure that they have not dried out. When they feel dry, simply water with a fine spray.

Fill an appropriate vessel with compost and water thoroughly. Lift a seedling plant from the tray while holding it by the leaves so as not to damage the delicate stem structure. Dig a hole in the centre of the soil in the pot and place the seedling inside, allowing the first leaves to be level with the soil.

Fill the window box or outdoor patch with compost and water very well. Gently lift a seedling by its leave, taking care not to damage the stalk. Make an indentation in the compost and place the seedling at a depth level with the compost. Nudge the compost snugly around the plant and leave it to grow, while ensuring that the compost never dries out. After a while you will be able to cut off just the amount of basil you need to add spectacular flavour to your meals.
