Herbs can be grown along side of other plants in your garden or in containers inside your home or in a greenhouse.

You can create your herb garden in various parts of your home or a small plot in your backyard during the summer season. A gardening space of 4 feet by 6 feet is sufficient to support a small family. The widely popular use of herbs is for cooking (culinary herbs), they are also grown for their foliage (aromatic herbs)  and certain flower producing herbs are appreciated for their beauty. Herbs are used fresh or dried.

For the palette, you may want to garnish plates and salads with certain herbs while other variety will be used to complement the flavor of a dish. As other plants, herbs grows as annuals, perennials, scrubs and trees. A well drained soil is ideal to plant herbs. If the soils is heavy or compacted, add organic matter to it until the desired balance is reached. You do not need to use any fertilizer. A sunny location is ideal for herb gardening but be aware that certain herbs are to be grown in the shade.

Some enjoys the afternoon shade. It is pleasant to know that very few diseases can he harmful to herbs. Occasionally red spider mites are seen on low-growing plants, rust can affect mint or aphids can be attached on dill, anise, caraway or fennel. These problems may arise in a dry, hot weather environment. You can buy herbs to be planted in your home garden or you may prefer to start from the seed.

It is quite a pleasure to see a plant grow from a single seed. You get to enjoy the full process of your plants life. You will feel quite rewarded altogether to have contributed to its humble beginning  considering the usefulness of herbs. There are a few exceptions but most herbs can be grown from a seed.

During the late winter, you should place seeds in a shallow box or a pot. Use light and well-drained soil to start your seeds in. Considering that herbs don’t have a deep root base, be sure to cover them with a thin layer of soil so that they are only planted shallow. The Golden Rule is the following : The finer is the seed, the more shallow it shall be sown.

Once Spring has arrived, it will be time to  transplant the seedling outside in the garden. Even though the majority of herbs can be grown from the seed, some herbs can be difficult to transplant. It is basically better for herbs such as dill, fennel, anise, and coriander to be bought and planted directly into the garden.
