It is Simple to Start a Herb Garden

Remember that time when you where looking for a particular herb and had to go through 4 stores before finding it? or that time at the supermarket when shopping for that big dinner you where preparing and was disappointed at the quality of the available herbs, not to mention the horrific prices.

Time to Start a Herb Garden
Growing your very own herbal garden is very simple and assures you of always having the full-flavored, fresh savory herbs at your fingertips all year round. These plants are above all, known for their culinary prowess but can be used equally for a number of purposes. Herbal teas, medicinal infusions are also widely used or made into scented soaps, candles, cleansers. They can be grown for ornamental or decorative reasons or simply for the sheer delight of filling one’s environment with delicate yet almost mystical scents.

If you are new to this or comparing it to growing vegetables or the houseplants that you have occasional problems with, it might seem like a time-consuming task and it can seem intimidating if you are not quite sure where to begin. But don’t worry, as you go along you will find it not only a very simple procedure, but the pleasure and rewards associated to this hobby will make you wonder why you didn’t start a herb garden a long time ago.

A herb garden does not need to take much space, so even it you live in a small apartment you can enjoy growing herbal plants. Since 1 single plant is sufficient to feed a small family for a long time, a variety of potted plants can be laid on a windowsill and grow in the sunlight provided and you can enjoy the sweet aroma emanating from your garden.

Of course, there are minimum requirements that must be taken into account. We need to provide specific conditions for the plants to grow to their succulent best. It comes down to good soil/good drainage, sunlight and in certain circumstance, growing lights and water.

Start by making a list of the herbs you currently use and research the ideal conditions for each one of them. A good source is go to your local garden store and have a look on the back of the seeds envelopes for all the instructions. Observe the space you plan on using for the garden to determine if it meets the needed conditions, and make sure you compare morning and afternoon. Not all herb crave sunlight, some even prefer a more indirect sunlit area and it can often be accommodated by placing taller growing plants such as sunflowers to shade the sun-shy ones.

Here is a general list of plants that needs full sunlight conditions for at least 6 hours a day:

* Basil
* Chives
* Dill
* Oregano
* Rosemary
* Tarragon
* Thyme

And here are some of those who prefer shade:

* Chervil
* Lemon Balm
* Mint

As mentioned before, you may wish to start your herb garden by using seeds or buying little baby plants. Be aware that certain herbs such as basil, chives, lemongrass, parsley and thyme are plants best started from seeds while herbs such as mint, rosemary, and tarragon are better when started from cuttings or plants bought at the store.

Soil is a very important step for the quality of the plants you are going to grow. Herb plants are at their best in a good soil mixed with a bit of sand that drains smoothly. When watering, the soil should dampen so to nourish the roots.
If you choose seeds to start your herb garden, be aware of the germination needs of all the plants you plan to grow. The soil’s temperature and its moisture are to be taken into consideration while making sure that the little plants have good circulation, sufficient sunlight and a good humidity level. Misting them with a spray bottle will be an important tools to assure a regular continuous humidity level.

When planting seeds or plants to begin your plantation, add more than you will need for you might loose a few of them at the early stage. Once the plants start showing their first leaves, you can clean-up the area and remove the weakest plants to allow the stronger ones to grow and spread.

In most cases, your crop will begin indoors in containers until the ouside weather is warmer. In areas where there is a lot of frost, plants should be kept indoors until mid-May. Before transplanting them outside make sure to harden them to this new environment by moving the plants a few hours at a time so that they may adjust smoothly to the new temperatures, the wind and the direct sunlight.

It is vitally important to water the plants properly because ‘not enough’ and ‘too much’ just will not do. The soil will be saturated but drains smoothly so that the roots gets the fresh water, but not drowned. The correct dosage will assure a vital, strong root system pushing energy to a thriving healthy plant.

Weeds are not welcomed in the herb garden, they are useless and take space and nutrients that are destined to the plants. Once the herbal garden start growing, you might even consider mulching the ground and stop weed-growth altogether. Doing so would also be beneficial at reducing water evaporation. Keeping an uncovered area around the plants with contribute strongly at keeping pests away.

Come late fall, harvest time lets you collect good amounts of fresh herbs that you will prepare for storing the winter supply of fresh tasty herbs and, as I mentioned at the beginning of this article, of all the different use you can make of herbs. Also, you might consider potting your outdoor herb garden and transferring them back inside for the winter. If you have a sunny window or two where the potted plant could enjoy the sunlight, you could very well make it to the next spring. Fluorescent light can compensate if sunlight is not enough.

Buy and Plant Your Herbs For Growing and Save a Bundle

Everything nowadays is more and more expensive and food supplies are no exception. Anyone who cooks will readily agree that herbs are great to add a warm array of flavors to your meals but comes at a very high price. Next time that you are at the grocery, just have a look at the herbs display and add up how much it would cost you if you were to start fresh and buy all of the usual herbs needed to prepare yours meals and multiply the result with they yearly frequency to renew them and you will be surprised at the significant cost engendered by the need for these products.

Yes, store-bought herbs are quite an expense, especially in this new age where the economy is in shambles. All of us has to rethink of how we spend our hard-earned money and how we can be more auto-sufficient. Instead of buying factory-packed herbs, buying and planting herbs for growing will not only present you with a  sound investment but will supply you with fresh, full-flavored herbs that will elevate your meals to gourmet level. Your garden, inside or outdoors, will provide you with fresh herbs at your fingertips for a long time providing they get sufficient sunlight, steady water supply and your occasional attention.

But I Live in a Small Appartment:
There are many situations where a garden seems quite an impossibility, a small apartment, no backyard or gardening space available etc… but these reasons do not need to be a problem when it comes to herbs. There are many options to counter these problems so that basically anyone can grow a garden indoors or outside of the home. The herbal plant takes up very little space, a 4 inches in diameter pot can hold a plant of the chosen herb and will be plenty to feed a small family for a long time. If you wish to grow various herbs than you can calculate the number of plants by 4 inches to see how much space they would occupy.

A sunny windowsill is a good place to grow your plants and if your light source is not sufficient than you can use grow lights to complement. Inside-grown plants can be as lush as plants grown outside. Other than sunlight, herbal plants need water and good drainage to grow healthy and strong. Two great advantages of growing herbs indoors are the proximity of the plants to pick fresh leaves from when you are cooking and absolute pest control. The only drawback is that if you are planning to grow herbs in a very large quantity, then you could lack space to do so, but other than that everything should go fine.

Harvesting and Storing Your Crop:
A time will come when you have harvested more that you need for your immediate use. You will need to store your herbs correctly so that they last for a very long time and can be used when needed. You can fill containers pretty much like the ones that are used for store-bought at the store. If you have a large harvest and you need to store more than the little bottles can hold, than you should vacuum pack the rest. Buy vacuum sealers at your neighborhood store and put the herbs in plastic bags and use the vacuum sealer to adequately seal the bags, sucking the air out of the bag at the same time. Identify each bag with the name of the herb that it contains. This will assure that the herbs remain fresh and full-flavored when you use them later on.

Growing herbs is not difficult at all and the plants easily adapts to your environment quite well as long as you give them the attention that they need to grow to their full potential. Once you start investing in herbs for growing for yourself, you will not only enjoy gourmet style cooking and save a lot of money doing so.

Growing Medicinal Herbs for Your Good Health

A medicinal herb garden was a home remedy necessity back in the colonial days. Modern medicine has bought us products for  a large variety of ailments,very often produced from these very same herbs, and has strongly overshadowed nature’s wonders for a long period of time. Homeopathic has taken its place in this “market” in the more recent decades offering, to say the least, an interesting alternative to the mass-produced offerings of the pharmaceutical empire.

Nowadays and for a number of (good) reasons, people are coming back nature’s way and culinary and medicinal herb gardening certainly has gained in momentum in recent years.A medicinal garden can indeed be a household basic to treat a variety of ailments. There are many ways to use these wonder plants, but most often the leaves, flowers and other useful parts of the plants will be mix with boiling water to make teas or infusions. They can also be mixed with other ingredients to form a natural creme or oil.

Below is a general list of herbs and their therapeutic and/or medicinal proprieties. Please be advised that I am in no way a medical doctor or professional and this should not be considered medical advise. As helpful as these herbs can be, a wrong combination can provoke negative effect from mild to serious. Be curious and research the information necessary to use them well. For instance honey and lemon are often added to teas for flavoring, but they add their own propriety to the mix which in this case are health benefits.

Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses:
Angelica: This herb is used for it’s antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Herbal tea made from its dried leaves will give an energy boost, stimulate the circulation of blood and reduce flatulence

  1. Sweet Basil: This herb is used for culinary purposes and, as a tea mix is a great remedy for upset stomach and indigestion. Made into an oil, it is used to massage sore aching muscles.
  2. Calendula: The flowers from this plant is pretty and serves a good purpose. The steeped flowers are use as a mouthwash and excellent for the gums. The petals and plantain leaves are made into a cream that can be used for cuts and wounds.
  3. Catnip: Known to drive cats pretty nuts, this herb tea produced from catnip is an efficient natural cold remedy. It reduces fever and can also be taken for headaches and an upset stomach.
  4. Chamomile: Helps induce sleep when taken as a herbal tea . It is known as a creme applied to heal dry skin problems.
  5. Common Yarrow: Another natural cold remedy helpful in reducing fever and flu symptoms. It is taken as a tea, often with elderflower and peppermint. The flower petals are made into a cream to treat cuts.
  6. Coriander: Used for its sedative properties. It is used as a sleep or calming aid when drank as a tea..
  7. Feverfew: It reduce fevers and helps prevent muscle spasms in herbal tea form. Chewing 5 leaves everyday is suggested for those who suffer from headaches and even migraines.
  8. Horehound: Used as a sore throat remedy and is often mixed with honey.
  9. Hyssop: A natural cold remedy and an efficient home remedy for sore throat when taken as a herbal tea.
  10. Peppermint: Crushed leaves added to boiling water is a wonderful air freshener and is very efficient as an inhalant to loosen phlegm. The mint plant comes in a large variety is is also also used for food flavoring..
  11. Echinacea Purpurea also known as Purple Coneflower: It is used as an immune system stimulant when steeped in water, .
  12. St. John’s Wort: Often prescribed as herbal remedy for depression because of its sedative properties..
  13. Thyme: Used in a variety of food recipes. As an herbal tea with honey added, it relieves a sore throat and and/or scratchy cough.
  14. Valerian: The root has sedative properties used to treat anxiety. In  a creme variation, it can be used for acne and skin rashes.

There are many other herbs to treat you and your loved ones but this gives you a good idea of the possibilities to grow a very practical herb medicine “cabinet” for quick solutions to various ailments.

How to Plant a Medicinal Herb Garden:
If you wish to start from seeds, begin the seeding indoors in small-sized containers and a sunny area. If light arrangements are not to your liking, you can easily resort to a fluorescent light or “grow light” to compensate. Avery thin layer will cover the seeds. Sowing should begin about 6 weeks preceding the last frost expected in your time zone. Water very sparingly, avoiding dislodging the seeds.

A few weeks before the anticipated last frost of the season, it would be a good idea to start exposing the little plants to the outside environment a few hours a day. Once the last frost has come and gone, it will be the time to transplant the growing plants out in the garden preferably in a raised bed. Some will prefer transplanting then in larger pots which is also fine.

If you prefer to wait alter the last frost, you can simply buy the little plants and transplant them the same way as described above. Remove the plants gently from the pots so not to disturb the roots. Once planted you can water them thoroughly. To reduce the plant’s shock during the move, you should favor a cloudy day or early dusk.

From that point on, you will be amazed at all the benefits of growing medicinal herbs can provide for you and your family.
