Harvesting to make fresh herbal tea
The best time of day to pick the leaves or flowers is right after the dew has dried but before the heat of the sun begins to draw the oils out of the plant. To prepare the leaves, you should bruise them to release their essential oils. Do this by rubbing the leaves together.
To make the tea, simply add the herbs to a teapot or directly in a mug or a cup. For each cup of tea, add about 2 to 3 teaspoons of fresh leaves and/or flowers. Slice rose hips in halves before adding. Let it steep for 5 minutes. This will release the flavors and the full benefits of the herb’s or flower’s qualities.

Setting-up a Mini Herb Garden
Until recently most people got their herbs at their local grocery store. A very convenient method though not without its shortcomings such as desired freshness, quantity and even occasionally, availability. There has been a steady growing rise in popularity in home gardening not only for the pleasure of gardening but to obtain the delightful difference fresh herbs adds to your prepared meals. Not everyone interested in growing herbs feel that they have the required space to do so. There is a solution to this constrain by growing your own mini herb garden.

A great advantage to consider is that herbs are very productive given to right conditions so that 1 or 2 plants of an herb is enough to feed an average family. Different herbs can be grown at different location indoors in containers, on a windowsill or hang in front of the patio door and out on the patio or balcony. Essentially a herb mini garden is created by using the available space that you can dispose of.
Inside or outside or your home there are 2 primary considerations to assure the success of herb gardening lighting and the soil. Though “low maintenance” herb plants do require well drained soil and a good 12 hours of sunlight a day. To assure good drainage is easy for your potted plants. Start with a 2 to 3 inch bed of stone gravel in the bottom of the pots or container mixing it with sans and soil to be used in the vessel. Avoid packing the soil mixture too much. Once lightly dampened you may begin the planting using either seeds or seedlings.
If you are beginning as a herbs gardener, it would be well advised to purchase your favorite herb plants from a store where you will replant them in the containers you have prepared beforehand. In a short while you will be able to harvest leaves to add to your meals.
Abundance of light is the key to successful mini gardening inside your home. The young herb plants crave a lot of light. They will need 10 to 12 hours of light a day so try to find which windows get the most sunshine to place the containers at the best places. South and west are usually provides the best light so you should consider this in your choice of location of your mini herb garden. Windows on the south side usually provides the most light and heat which could burn new or tender plants so they should, at that stage, be placed on north side window sills. Observe your plants to prevent overheating and to prevent unnecessary damage. It is equally recommended to turns the plants once a week to equally distribute light on all sides of the plant.
If it is not possible to insure the adequate lighting to an indoor mini garden you should consider using grow lights or fluorescent tubes. Of course natural light is better but artificial will get the job done, You can purchase them at nurseries, garden and hardware stores for a fair price. Place these lights about 10 inches above the young plants and raise them up to 18 inches over the maturing or larger ones. They should be on for about 10 hours a day to achieve the result of natural sunlight.

Fresh Herb Gardening How-To Guide
So you’re thinking about starting a herb garden but not sure where to start. You may be disappointed by the selection of herbs offered at the supermarket, the lack of freshness of the high price of certain herbs. If any or all of these reasons rings true for you then fresh herb gardening is the answer to this problem. Fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, mint, or fennel at your fingertips make mealtimes special and there is no reason you can’t start your own herb garden.

A garden, inside or outside your home is easy to maintain and can quite a lot of fun and gives you a sense of accomplishment and independence. Sure enough, growing these plants are a true delight for culinary purposes as for added beauty to your surrounding.
A fresh herb gardening doesn’t have to be very big so space is not much of an important factor. You can grow herbs in your home even if you live in a small apartment. You can simply start a potted herb garden on your windowsill or on your patio.
So where do you begin? Location is very important and should be the first point to consider. This is because most herbs require specific conditions to grow fresh and tasteful. While many herbs enjoy a sunny, dry location there are certain herbs that prefers filtered sunlight and moist growing conditions.
Draw yourself a list of the herbs you enjoy adding in your meals and then research their ideal growing conditions. Examine the possible location for morning and afternoon sunlight to determine whether you have the right conditions for them to grow in. You should find the best spot that will accommodate each herb you plan to grow. You may wish to add taller plants like sunflowers to create shade for sun-shy plants. It is an important step to make a design of the garden. It will help you put your ideas together before you start realizing the project.
The following plants will do best in a sunny location and needs full sun for most of the day:
- Basil
- Chives
- Dill
- Oregano
- Rosemary
- Tarragon
- Thyme
These plants prefer partial shade to grow well and healthy:
- Chervil
- Lemon Balm
- Mint
Planning the garden
You can start a herb garden by planting only the herbs you wish to use in your daily cooking. You may wish to complement them with herbs that you haven’t tried before just to add some excitement to your taste buds. Keep in mind that you will not need several plants of each variety. One plant can produce enough herbs to supply your culinary needs for a long time and most herbs sprout once cut will actually grow better. However, if you wish to grow herbs for harvesting and preserving in oil, vinegar or for freezing you should consider growing several plants to carry you through the winter season.
A herb garden can be started by planting seeds, propagating them from cuttings or buying seedlings from your local garden shop or nursery. Basil, chives, lemongrass, parsley, and thyme are best started from seed while mint, rosemary, and tarragon are easily propagated from cuttings or bought as plants.
If you decide to start a herb garden using seeds make sure you know how to germinate each plant such as the correct soil temperature and moisture that they need to grow. The new baby plants will need to have good air circulation, sunlight, and humidity. You can them using a spray bottle to help keep the humidity constant.
Maintaining your garden
Once the plants starts growing and their first few sets of leaves appears, you can eliminate some of the weaker plants to allow the stronger ones enough space to spread out and grow. If the plants don’t have enough room to grow in they won’t produce as well as they should.
If you live in an area that gets a lot of frost you may want to start your herb garden in containers inside your home until the warm season begins (usually around mid-May). When planting them to an outdoors setting, make sure to harden them by slowly moving them so that they don’t suffer while adjusting to new temperatures, wind, and light. A cool, cloudy day is a good time for transplanting.
Of course, it is important to water your plants often but avoid over-watering herbs that must enjoy dry conditions to thrive. It is equally important that the oil drains well to prevent roots from rotting. A strong root system is the secret to a healthy plant.
Another important factor is to weed your herb garden. Keeping weeds at bay will give your herbs more space to grow and keep the garden neat and attractive. Once your plants have reached several inches in height, mulch the ground to prevent weed growth and help reduce water evaporation. Leave an uncovered area at the base of each plant to keep pests like slugs and snails from invading the area.
Your hard work will reap its reward once the plants starts growing and are big enough for you to start harvesting. You will find a multitude of uses for each herb that you have grown from simple culinary use or medicinal herbs for ailments and making home made soaps, potpourri, scented candles.
Winter care
Once the colder season start to show you will need to move your potted herbs inside the house. Use a sunny window that receives a few hours of sunlight daily so that you may be able to continue growing your herbs throughout the winter season. If you cannot obtain enough sunlight, try some fluorescent lighting. You can keep a supply of herbs for winter by freezing herb cubes in water or oil.

Herb Garden Designs
As we have already seen in previous articles, herb plants can be grown inside or outside your home thus providing you with fresh flavorful herbs all year round. Having these wonderful plants surrounding us deserves a aesthetic arrangements so lets have a look at herb garden designs.
It isn’t necessary to grow herbs in their own garden. Various herbs can be arranged anywhere in already existing beds and borders complementing flowers and plants. You may prefer to contain certain herbs by themselves such for easy harvesting or if you need to grow large quantities. Certain herbs can be rampant and that many spread by seed and runners. A small 4×4 small garden can be a lot of work as a knot garden might exercise your patience. A well organized, larger garden can be a remarkable experience. Here are some good ideas on how to create a beautiful and practical herb garden.
Start with a sunny spot in your yard that is near the kitchen, so that when cooking you can easily step out to collect the needed herbs to use immediately fresh out of the garden, literally. If the herbs that you’ll be growing in large quantity to harvest and dry at the end of the season then you can use an area anywhere in the yard.
The area for your garden should occupy accordingly to the quantities you plan on growing. Culinary herbs might not take much space since you cut only what you need , in that instance a few plant should be enough to see you through the season. Space is more dependent on how many different herbs you want to grow and how many of the herbs are perennial. If you are growing for all year use and plan to dry and freeze, you will want more plant.
Another consideration is if you are growing certain herbs for potpourri or dyes, you will need a much larger space. Lastly, will the garden be exclusively for herbs or will you be inter-planting that space with other plants or vegetables.

Basic design ideas to start you off
It is important to plan the distribution of you herbs from the beginning. When growing, various herbs will take different forms. Some herbs grows thick but short in height while others are long and lean. Certain herbs have the tendency to grow and crawl about and can even behave like vine does. This unstructured mixture can seem totally out of control especially during their peak season of May through June.
Simple geometric forms such as square, triangles, circles or half-circles are a great way to begin a structure to bed these ”wild” herbs, You can even try putting forms together such as a triangle inside a round shape or a large pie chart type of structure the dividing lines being pathways, Paths are often paved with bricks, stones or even old wood adding a four-season look to the finished garden. Perhaps a central figure, a birdbath or a sundial will add dimension and depth to the overall look. A few well placed lights can add a dramatic effect in the evening.
Herb garden designs can also be based on theme, it can be based on color, scent and even variations of a particular herb. Some gardeners will prefer to keep the perennial herb apart from the annuals. Same as with a flower garden, perennials spread and develop with time. Open spaces can be filled every new season with annuals, just be careful not to disturb the soil near the perennial plants.
Herbs and vegetables
Certain herds growing along vegetables are very well suited. Some even tends to flavor the surrounding veggies adding their taste to them as they grow. They can be harvested for immediate use as you get a few vegetables for the meal you are preparing. Annual herbs like basil, coriander and dill are very popular herbs grown with vegetables.
Herbs and flowers
Certain herbs are very attractive and are an welcome addition to any flower garden. Lavender will give a flower garden a stunning effect and herbs like monarda and calendula can be considered ornamental since they are seldom used otherwise. Culinary herbs such as dill and borage will look great in a cottage style garden where they can be left to self-seed with abandon.
An advantage to adding your herbs in the vegetable or flower garden is that many herbs attract ”good” insects that can help in overall pest control, though beneficial, you may have to sacrifice some of the herb plants.
Designing yourself a herb garden is a simple task that you can put together on paper first. Just start by doodling different arrangements of assorted shapes until you have a few good ideas to work with. If you don’t have it already, get yourself a small geometry kit at your local dollar store. Draw the basic bird’s view shape of your yard or area the garden will be to have a good idea of the surroundings you are working in. Using the geometric forms (ruler, triangle, compass…) draw different layouts the garden until you get a satisfactory design. Consider the paths throughout the garden for easy access and you might like to add color to give your design more realism and help you sort out the color scheme.

Growing Herbs in Pots
If you choose to grow herbs indoor you will be using pots or containers. You may also choose to grow your herbs on a windowsill or hanging baskets. Growing herbs in pots is not any more challenging than growing doing so in an outdoor garden. Indoor herbs have the same growing requirements that garden herbs need.

In any circumstances all plants have 3 basic needs to grow successfully ; they will need sunlight, a proper soil mix and water. Growing herbs is no exception. Sunlight is a key ingredient for any type of plants including herbs whether you choose to grow them in a outdoor or indoor environment.
If you choose to grow your herbs indoor, you will benefit greatly by placing them near windows on the south or west side of your home. This will assure you that the herbs are getting the best light for them to grow in.
When it comes to herb gardening it is important to know that different plants have different light requirements but, as a whole, they all need sunlight. An alternative or supplement to natural sunlight can be obtained by the use of “grow lamps” or fluorescent lamps.
It is also important to grow the herbs in a well-drained, well-balanced soil. Start with about 1 inch of gravel at the bottom of each pot or container to ensure good drainage. Fill the rest of the pots with 2 parts of sterilized potting soil with 1 part coarse sand or perlite.
To ensure that the soil is sweet enough for the herbs that you’ll be growing inside of your home, you can supplement the soil with 1 teaspoon of lime per 5-inch pot. Of course the indoor-grown herbs will need water. To keep the herbs within a humid condition you can mist the plants and keep the pebbles moist. Herbs being grown in pots or containers will need to have more water than those grown outside in the garden, but keep in mind that when watering the inside plants to avoid getting their roots drenched or soggy.
A big plus for growing herbs in pots or containers is that it is possible for you to move them around your home if needed. You may wish for annuals to stay indoors all year round but enjoy the freedom of keeping the perennials outside during the summer season. Be sure to bring all your herbs back indoor before any risk of a frost during the later part of the season to avoid any loss of foliage.
There is an important exception with mint, chives, and tarragon. After a light frost, these herbs begin a rest period that provokes a firmer, fresher growth. By experimenting, you will notice that although all herbs can be grown in pots, some tends to have better results then others. For instance, mint will do great in a container but it would literally grow out of control if you were to grow it outdoor. In closing, keeping an indoor home garden is fairly simple. It is a great advantage for you have your fresh herbs within reach at all time while cooking.
Making use of the tips listed above, you have a good foundation to ensure proper care and health of the herbs you have chosen to grow. I would suggest that you give the plants a periodic light feeding and re-pot your plant once a year for optimum health and production. Over all it is fairly easy to maintain an indoor herb garden. It keeps the herbs handy and within reach anytime you need them for cooking.
With these tips listed above, you will be able to care for your herbs and ensure a healthy plant. You should also include periodic light feeding and yearly re-potting for optimum health of the herbs. Annuals will need to be replanted and bring the perennials outside for the summer season. Occasional harvesting and pruning your herbs will only encourage to grow so fell free to use your herbs as often as you wish. Use them in your recipes, store them for late use or gives some of them to your friends.

Quick Guide to Herb Garden Kits
What to do if you would like to start a herb garden but feel that you might not have the proper knowledge on how to get started? Yes, there can be a number of questions that you ask yourself before beginning your journey in the world of herb gardening. Which herbs to choose, should I start with plants or seeds? What kind of soil should I use, is that soil right for every herb?
If that is your feeling, you should begin by buying a already packaged kit. Herb garden kits are designed to start you off easily by providing the material and the answer to your ”newbie” questions. The kit contain a wide variety of well-categorized herbs (Italian, German, culinary and international herbs, herbal tea herbs, salsa seeds and a lot more. Herb garden kits can vary from one brand to another but basically contain similar items to properly start you off with herb gardening. The kit will provide you with seeds and some kist include a dome for constant temperature and humidity to help herbs grow healthy roots. Of course the kit include an instructional guide to help you get started.

If you are unsure in taking the first step to growing herbs, the easy to follow instructions will assure your success. Some kits also offer recipes for the herbs you are growing. If you buy your kit through a website, you may be offered to sign-up to a newsletter where you can obtain recipes and other useful information. Most herb garden kits provide a planter to grow the herbs in. Though all kits are different, most kits include either the soil or pellets in which to grow the seeds in. You can choose to buy an outdoor or an indoor kit.
If you choose to purchase the indoor kit you will benefit from the following advantages. Herbs are more enjoyable for they are right at your finger tips. Herbs are growing around you in your kitchen and are easily available when you are cooking and you wish to add a little seasoning to the meal you are preparing. It is also easy to harvest the herbs and freeze them for future use. Also, indoor conditions provides the plant with constant growing possibilities – you won’t have to winterize your herb plant that cannot survive the harsh winter weather outside of your home.
Being inside, the herbs can enjoy a constant temperature. Even though herb garden kits are different from one another, they tend to be small and compact making them ideal for small spaces or apartments. Creating an Italian Herb Garden
Having an Italian herb garden provides you with a tremendous amount of possibilities. Many of the most famous and tastiest herbs in the world are of Italian origin. Italy is known worldwide for its fabulous cuisine, famous partially because of the blend of herbs used.

Basil is a well know Italian herb and useful in many recipes. Not only does this herb add a distinctive flavor to many Italian cuisines, it is equally useful in the garden to the well-being of other plants. When growing basil in near peppers and tomatoes you will actually improve their overall flavor. In addition, basil also act as a repellent to flies and mosquitoes.
Parsley is useful in Italian dishes but can be a difficult plant to grow compared to other herbs. A long time ago, it was popular to eat fresh, raw parsley after a flavorful meal to prevent bad breath. It became a tradition end a meal by serving a parsley in a little dish.
Nowadays the tradition remains by garnishing various dishes with parsley. Another flavorful herb used for decoration is oregano. Small purple flowers appear when the pant reaches maturity. When it has flowered, oregano is at its most flavorful therefore it is important not to harvest oregano before that stage. The seeds of fennel are well appreciated in Italian sausages.
It should be noted that, as opposed to oregano, fennel tends to loose flavor as it gains in maturity. Being a perennial plant, fennel will retain flavor if you divide and replant the plants every 2-3 years. Rosemary is another Italian herb that protects your garden. This herb grows as a big shrub decorated with small blue flowers that is appealing to bees, thus keeping them away from other parts of your garden.
An Italian herb garden is sure to contain the useful, widely popular garlic. Garlic is surely the herd that Italian cuisine employs the most. The planted gloves grows well in any type of garden rather independently. Garlic is a strong perennial but is sensitive to frost. Once harvested, they can be stores either by freezing them or by picking and refrigerate them.
Sage is appreciated in various dishes ranging from meat to salads. Flavor is at its peak in the new shoots so it is preferable to keep the sage plants trim, which in turn, will help new shoots to grow. Once the sage has bloomed it can be harvested. Of course there are numerous other herbs than can make up an Italian herb garden, one should take into consideration which herbs you will be using in your recipes. Also it is important to take into account the needs of each plant to grow healthy in the environment provided.
As a added bonus Italian herbs adds a colorful array to landscape designs. These herbs planted amongst other plants, you will be delighted by the sweet aromas within your environment.
